Are you frustrated with the amount of money you are spending on your back-of-house team only to have complaints about food quality and consistency? It isn’t every day.  But a few times a week, or a month, the inevitable happens.  An unhappy guest with the same complaint.  Consistency.

We believe this isn’t just a small issue.  It is actually a sign that it might be time to add 3 small steps to your team’s daily routine in order to GUARANTEE food quality improvement.

1. Standardize Recipes and Procedures

  • Why it matters: Consistency is key to quality. Standard recipes ensure every dish meets the same taste, portion, and presentation standards.

  • How to do it: Create detailed recipe cards including ingredients, quantities, cooking times, plating instructions, and even photos. Train staff to follow these precisely.

  • Foodify tip: This isn’t something to put off till there is a free week.  This is something to start TODAY.  Set the goal of 3 recipes a day until all recipes are recorded.

2. Implement Regular Staff Training and Monitoring

  • Why it matters: Even with the best procedures, untrained staff can compromise quality.

  • How to do it: Provide initial and ongoing training on food safety, hygiene, and preparation standards. Use checklists and spot-checks to ensure compliance.

  • Foodify Tip: Training doesn’t have to mean a full day away from the restaurant.  We believe training should be part of your daily routine.  What if you reviewed one dish during each pre-shift meeting?  Reviewing the quality of the ingredients, the taste, and the ‘why’ behind each dish so that both FOH and BOH teams are aligned.

3. Establish a Clear Food Inspection Routine

  • Why it matters: Quality starts with raw ingredients and ends with the final plated dish.

  • How to do it: Inspect ingredients upon delivery (freshness, temperature, packaging), monitor prep stages, and review final dishes before serving. Assign a shift supervisor or kitchen manager to oversee this.

  • Foodify tip:  We believe your management team should be actively involved in food inspection and sanitation.  This isn’t something for only the owner to-do.  Your management team should be your eyes and ears, and actively involved in monitoring food sanitation practices daily.
